Filippo Brunelleschi

Filippo Brunelleschi was born in Florence in 1377. His father was called Brunellesco Di Lippo and he was a notary. Brunellesco wanted his son to study laws to become a notary one day, but Filippo liked the art and his great passion took him to study arts . In 1401 Florence’s Lordship announced a contest to sculpture the Baptistry’s door. Brunelleschi and Ghiberti won the contest but the door was carved by Ghiberti only. Brunelleschi began to draw monumental architectures and to study the Classic monuments. From 1404 to 1418 Filippo designed the Duomo Chapel, one of the most famous design in the human history. The “ Spinapesce” internal structure supports the great Chapel without any horizontal load bearings, giving the heavy structure the lightness we can observe. The Gothic style of the Chapel allows to see the essential structures of the Chapel, built without any kind of external decorations. Other important projects of Brunellescchi are: The Innocenti Hospital, San Lorenzo Sagrestia, S. Spirito Church, The Pazzi Chapel, Pitti Palace. Brunelleschi died in 1446 in Florence, under his “ Cupola”. The city of Florence owes great part of its success to this artist and architect.
